Learning UNIX or Linux May Open Doors for Your Career

So maybe you’ve heard of the Linux operating system before, but did you know that it could have the potential to make you a more valuable player in the workforce? Many people who aren’t familiar with operating systems might not realize the potential opportunities that are involved with learning about them. Just because your job doesn’t directly involve operating systems doesn’t mean they aren’t important. If you work in an area of business that is involved with operating systems such as UNIX or Linux, you can become more versatile in your workplace if you understand them. Our UNIX/Linux for Newbs instructor, John Wright, mentions below how this has benefitted his career:

“Learning the UNIX/Linux operating systems has enabled me to start a career in a very specialized field. Once you use UNIX/Linux at home, work, or your personal time and start to enjoy it, you will learn things that can prepare you for an entry level job as a UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator. Learning these operating systems will open up doors for your career in the IT field. UNIX/Linux is a very specialized operating system, and understanding it makes you very marketable even in non-system administration careers. Personally, the opportunities at my work and in my career opened up once I started using UNIX/Linux at home. I was surprised at how quickly I became successful.”

In the current job market it’s important that we distinguish ourselves as much as possible to advance in the workplace. Like John mentioned, you don’t need to be in a system administration field for these operating systems to be useful to you. If you are interested in learning UNIX and Linux to make yourself more marketable, take John’s class UNIX/Linux for Newbs at Continuing Education. John says, “The course will teach you the basics of UNIX/Linux Operating Systems which will enable you to interact with it at home or at work.
